About Poetrie.com

It started with sisters...

"Sisters, sisters
There were never such devoted sisters,
Never had to have a chaperone, no sir,
I’m there to keep my eye on her
Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome
She wore the dress, and I stayed home
All kinds of weather, we stick together
The same in the rain and sun
Two different faces, but in tight places
We think and we act as one.”
--Sisters, Sisters by Irving Berlin

Poetrie was founded and inspired by five sisters from Seattle and is now owned by Zoe Alexander, a Los Angeles-based fashionista. The ladies all grew up through the 80’s and 90’s, through fields of flannel and baggy overalls, each one discovered the meaning of fashion. Hand-me-downs were handed down the ladder from sister to sister, transferring fashion sense through a ten year age difference. Different phases in all of their teenage development inspired individual trend-setting looks, such as adolescent rebellion with black lipstick or idolization of their favorite musicians with Madonna studded-leather jackets. As the craze of shoulder pads and acid wash jeans died down, the sisters grew up, developing their own unique styles. While the sisters have graduated to raiding much larger closets, the clothes they wore still defined important moments of their lives. The blazer and skirt worn to a dream job interview, or a memory of the Betsey Johnson dress worn on that first date with a fiance, made their clothes hold significance and meaning.

The development of their own unique style has turned each woman into the individual she is today, whether it be the successful business woman or the concert-going free spirit. The five sisters endured through fashion successes and fashion faux pas, but they yet share a sisterly bond and the fondest of childhood memories irrevocably linked to those clothes. Poetrie is dedicated to people who remember the steps it took to develop their own sense of style and what inspires them to express their personalities, or their own “poetrie,” through what they wear today.

The Poetrie.com Mission

The Poetrie girls want to bring a little poetry back into people's daily lives. We get it -- few people read actual poetry anymore. Memorizing and reciting poems is an art that belonged to another time.

But that doesn't mean that we can't be thrilled by art in other ways. Poetrie is all about the discovery of truth, the thrill of life, about giving into a moment, or about the pang of memory. All of which can be induced by treasuring a beautiful object, wearing a vintage dress, or doing the clasp on a 100-year-old bracelet.

That is our goal at Poetrie - to bring you beautiful clothing, jewelry, and gifts from independent artists and designers - to help bring some poetic moments into your everyday life. And have some fun while doing it!

"They say Ulysses, wearied of wonders,
wept with love on seeing Ithaca,
humble and green. Art is that Ithaca,
a green eternity, not wonders.

Art is endless like a river flowing,
passing, yet remaining, a mirror to the same
inconstant Heraclitus, who is the same
and yet another, like the river flowing.
--The Art of Poetry by Jorge Luis Borges
